Measuring only 60mm (L) x 44.5mm (W) x 6mm (H), Omron's new 3S4YR-SHR0X/0J ultra-compact manual insert IC card reader, introduced at the National Design Engineering Show in Chicago, provides an ideal data collection solution for space-confined applications. These include pre-paid card systems, IC credit card readers, time and attendance control, access control, telecommunications hand sets, vending machines, ID control and other data capture.

Both SHR models support ISO chip card locations. The SHR0X also supports Bull/CP8 chip card locations, enabling a variety of smart card applications. The reader is specially designed to reduce wear and tear on the card by lifting it onto the reader's contacts, rather than sliding the card over common friction contacts. Since it is mounted to the printed circuit board, no additional wiring is needed to install this card reader. SHR specifications include: load voltage of 30 VDC max., current carrying capacity of 0.1A, ambient operating temperature range of -25° to 75°C (-13° to 167°F) for both indoor and outdoor usage and a service life of 300,000 passes minimum.
